I never thought I’d be the person who needed to take a break from technology. My life nowadays, like most people’s, would be centered around technology. From that first groggy check of the phone in the morning to the final scroll before bed, technology weaves its way through every moment of the day.

Social media, work emails, news updates, my streaming service — all that stuff just threads these small digital strings that pull the hours and days of my life. Suddenly, it dawned on me: Oh, I’m feeling all stressed out, mentally exhausted, and just “off.” That’s perhaps how much I needed change — a major one. I would spend one weekend without technology and stay present to what would happen…to be present in the moment.

Nearly Losing My Sanity

The very idea of going offline was something I could anticipate with a strange mixture of excitement and horror. That Friday night, I sent out my last texts, set my e-mail auto-responder, and announced to all corners to friends and family that I would be hibernating for the weekend. When I turned off my phone, laptop, and tablet, I was sort of ready but also slightly anxious.

Saturday morning came, and, by instinct, I reached to the nightstand beside my bed to pick up my phone. That’s when the anxiety began to set in. What if I missed something significant? What if somebody needed me? And finally, what if I just really needed to know the weather, breaking news, or the final score to the previous night’s game? 

As these questions spiraled, I was battling the urge to power up my phone “just to check.” The silence of my home [which was kind of deafening] left me unsettled. I was antsy and left with nothing other than my thoughts and the option to do “something” to stay busy. The adverse affects from disconnecting from the world for only 12 hours was like a withdrawal from a drug.

I almost lost my mind as I came to the realization of just how addicted I had become to this endless flow of information and stimulation.

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

And then, as the hours ticked on, a new anxiety loomed: FOMO . I was convinced that when I rejoined the rest of the world, everyone would have done something extraordinary or that, there would have been a significant, world-moving development.

I had this mental image of my friends having this insanely fabulous time, Instagramming funny stories with the group and organizing future reunions to which I was not present. I felt so alone and insecure. Did they think I was snubbing them? Would they honestly forget about me?

I never considered myself someone who craved social validation, but my reaction to being unplugged told a different story: I found out I used those digital breadcrumbs to furnish those things. I found it ironic that even though I suddenly had a lot more free time, I felt stuck and out of touch with what was going on around me.

Out of Touch with the World

As the day marched on, I increasingly became out of touch with the world. Not receiving news and other updates steadily was like floating in open space within a bubble, quite out of touch with reality. 

I was used to always knowing what was happening by constantly checking the news and scrolling through Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. Without this steady flow of updates, I felt disconnected. I had no idea what was going on with my friends, celebrities, or even major world events. 

It was strange and humbling to realize that my constant checking wasn’t really necessary. I felt left out and a bit hurt by how little my knowledge and opinions actually mattered. #realitycheck

A Gradual Sense of Peace

But something quite remarkable began to happen on Saturday night going into Sunday. I relaxed.

With the din of notifications gone, my mind grew quiet. I noticed things around me in a way I hadn’t in a long time: the sounds of birds outside my window, the light of the early morning that would stretch through my curtain into my room, and the comforting ritual of making myself a cup of coffee in the morning but not feeling a rush to get back to my phone.

I took a walk in the park — something I hadn’t done in a long time. Without my phone, the world felt more alive. I actually physically looked up and talked to people. I noticed how children played, how dogs ran through the grass, and the gentle rustling of leaves. 

I felt at peace and realized that when I was consumed by my numerous technology devices, I had been missing out on these simple pleasures of life. I wasn’t constantly worried about missing emails, messages, or alerts. I was just being in the moment, and it was liberating.

I felt much calmer and enjoyed a weekend of mindfulness. I could read a book peacefully, just like I used to, without feeling rushed. I also cooked some of my best meals without worrying about posting them online. I allowed myself to fully enjoy these moments, just for my own pleasure, without any distractions.

By Sunday night, I felt much more relaxed and focused. I realized how draining it had been to always stay connected. Constantly checking my phone, endlessly scrolling, and fearing I might miss out on something created a low-level anxiety that I thought was normal.

Without technology, I rediscovered myself in ways I hadn’t in years. I learned to enjoy my own company and found peace in solitude. I started thinking more about my life, my goals, and what truly made me happy. I understood that many things I pursued online were just distractions from what really mattered. I found that true happiness came from reconnecting with myself and being present in the moment.

The Invitation to Disconnect

So, on Sunday night, when I finally turned the cell phone back on, of course, life just went on. Nothing happened in between, no emergencies, no life-altering news — just a handful of messages and notifications that suddenly seemed much more insignificant, much less pressing. All my friends just asked what I did that Saturday, and some even got inspired by my weekend digital detox experiment.

One of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences I had was taking a break from technology for a weekend. This break made me face my dependence on technology, my fear of missing out, and my anxiety about being disconnected. Ultimately, it helped me find a peace and happiness I didn’t realize I was missing.
