Artificial Intelligence: Understanding the Field of Study

Today, AI is increasingly intervening in the world, touching most of our lives and transforming industries and societies. Twenty years ago, this compelling new field of science — where hardware and software merge to harness machine learning algorithms to automatically extract information and undertake tasks — was seen by most people as just a genre of sci-fi entertainment.

But today, AI, as it is widely known, is fast becoming a priority for researchers, entrepreneurs and companies in almost every field; it will play a key role in the next technological revolution, introducing new limits for computers, machines and intelligent software.

Artificial Intelligence is often shortened to AI, as it refers to systems that can interact with their environment and accomplish goals that resemble human intelligence. These include tasks such as learning, listening, planning, reasoning, recognizing objects and providing natural-sounding text to text-to-speech systems.

AI is not one technology, but an ecosystem of technologies and methodologies that allow machines to learn from data and then improve at performing their assigned tasks without additional human input.

Although it has been around for decades and is a natural evolution from advances in automation dating back into the mid-20th century, it is present-day advances in computational power, availability of data, and algorithmic techniques that are enabling AI to come to fruition in earnest today.

AI today is integrated into apps as simple as virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, but it extends into embedded systems operating via brokered systems in everything from manufacturing to telecommunications. Also, we can now find AI in autonomous vehicles, healthcare diagnostics (such as advanced clinical decision-making systems), and online search and recommendation systems.

The Basics of Artificial Intelligence

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a broad term referring to the many technologies and approaches that enable intelligent behavior in digital machines. At its most basic, AI represents an effort to (attempt to) replicate or simulate human intelligence within computers, one way or another. This can be achieved using many different methods, including a collection of algorithms we refer to as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing and computer vision.

Key Components of AI

  1. Machine Learning (ML): A branch of AI that typically involves training algorithms to recognize patterns and make predictions or decisions by being exposed to large datasets. ML enables systems to learn from experience, essentially “self-programming” instead of being explicitly programmed for every task.
  2. Deep Learning: An advanced form of machine learning that uses complicated neural networks with many layers (hence ‘deep’) to spot complex patterns in data, such as those found in photos or speech.
  3. Natural Language Processing/Understanding (NLU): Natural language processing (sometimes referred to just as NLP or NLU) means that, unlike a web search, a machine will need to understand, interpret and respond to language as humans do, even generating responses as text. It powers everything from chatbots to translation to voice-activated assistants.
  4. Computer Vision: This is the study of how to teach machines to see and interpret images and/or video with the goal of recognizing objects or features in still images or videos (i.e., pedestrians, stop signs, house beds, cats).

Types of AI

AI can be classified into two main categories based on its capabilities:

  1. Narrow AI, or Weak AI: This is an artificial intelligence system designed to perform a specific task or a narrow set of tasks — for instance, a speech recognition system, or a recommendation algorithm run by an online streaming service.
  2. General AI or Strong AI or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): This is AI that can comprehend, learn and apply knowledge across broad domains, as most humans do. While we can give computers narrow AI capabilities today, it is not yet apparent how to design a machine capable of general AI. Nor is it clear whether we will be able to create such a computer within the next 30, 50 or 100 years.

Historical Development of AI

Since its inception in the 1950s, the history of AI has seen a series of bold milestones and shifting paradigms:

Early Beginnings

1950s: The term artificial intelligence was coined by the British mathematician Alan Turing, who devised a test called the Turing Test. This test measured a machine’s ability to convincingly mimic intelligent human behavior.

1956: The Dartmouth Conference, originated by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky, established AI as an academic discipline. The phrase “Artificial Intelligence” was coined here. The first paper with “Artificial Intelligence” in the title was presented at this conference.

The Rise of Expert Systems

1970s-1980s: Another significant development in AI was the creation of expert systems, which were able to solve problems in a specific domain (i.e., diagnose illnesses or analyze financial data) through the use of knowledge-based methods.

The AI Winter

1980s-1990s: As high expectations around AI were not met with real-world success and the computers of the time could not handle the models, interest and funding for AI dwindled, creating an “AI Winter.”

The Resurgence

2000s–Present: Improvements in processing power combined with large datasets and the development of new neural networks and machine learning algorithms sparked interest in the field once more.

Notable achievements in the areas of deep learning, neural networks and other fields have resulted from innovations such as computational learning and reinforcement learning.

Applications of AI in Everyday Life

AI is increasingly everywhere, often working behind the scenes. Here are some of its applications:

Healthcare

AI is revolutionizing healthcare by improving diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient care. Examples include:

  1. Medical Imaging: This type of imaging involves using algorithms to analyze medical images for the purpose of detecting diseases such as cancer before they become more difficult to treat.
  2. Personalized Medicine: AI will allow us to tailor treatments down to the level of individuals in order to better address specific genetic profiles and past medical histories.
  3. Virtual Health Assistants: These AI-powered chatbots provide medical advice and monitor patients’ health status.

Transportation

Artificial Intelligence is seen as the driving force behind autonomous vehicles, traffic management, and optimized logistics. How so? Take a look below:

AI-Driven Vehicles: Tesla, Waymo from the UK and other companies are currently racing to develop autonomous cars, able to drive along roads with minimal human intervention.

Traffic Management: AI systems analyze traffic patterns to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion.

Finance

Already, the financial sector employs AI for fraud detection, trading and personalized financial advice due to:

Fraud Surveillance: AI algorithms identify suspicious transactions and patterns to prevent fraud.

Algorithmic Trading: Artificial intelligence-based systems engage in speedy and efficient high-frequency trading based on analysis of market data.

Personal finance: Smart apps serve up money-spending insights and better investments.

Entertainment

AI enhances the entertainment industry through content recommendation, creation, and interactive experiences. Examples include:

Streaming Services: On an online streaming service such as Netflix or Spotify, artificial intelligence algorithms take in your listening or viewing history to suggest music or movies based on what you have enjoyed in the past.

Video Games: AI creates intelligent and adaptive non-player characters (NPCs) that enhance gaming experiences.

Content Creation: AI tools assist in generating music, art, and even movie scripts.

Education

AI is transforming education by personalizing learning experiences and automating administrative tasks. Examples include:

Adaptive Learning: AI-powered platforms adjust learning materials to match students’ progress and needs.

Support for the Field of Education: AI is now performing many of the routine tasks that educators and counselors do, such as grading and scheduling. This allows educational professionals to focus on activities for which they are uniquely qualified.

Ethical and Social Implications of AI

Those watching AI closely recognize that this exciting new field also raises fundamental, ethical, and social challenges. The first area of concern is what is called sentiment analysis systems. Sentiment analysis systems are tools or software used to evaluate and interpret the emotional tone or sentiment expressed in text data, such as social media posts, reviews, or other forms of communication.

Many users expressed concern about the accuracy, reliability, bias, or ethical implications of these systems. Critics warn that machines could be partially biased, not only by the original understanding of the data but also by the system’s way of detecting and inferring sentiment throughout the process.

Another topic of concern is data sharing. Focusing on neural networks, the training process involves feeding data into the model for prediction. This prompts two questions: From where does the data originate? How is it handled?

As users grow increasingly concerned about their personal data and the privacy of life in the digital world, they worry about the tension between the right to privacy and the right to hold powerful companies or governments accountable for using such data against them. Thus, addressing social and legal responsibilities alone is not enough. Developing appropriate regulations for data use and transparency requires political action which involves a democratic public engaging in dialogue to agree on the limits, terms, and conditions.

Bias and Fairness

AI systems, for example, can show discrimination based on the underlying biases in their training data. This can make it difficult to assure fairness and address discrimination in models. For instance, bias in facial recognition systems can result in higher error rates for some demographic groups.

Privacy and Security

Concerns over the use of AI can be linked to the collection and manipulation of large quantities of personal data, and how this data can jeopardize privacy. It is vital to the use of artificial intelligence that data be stored and processed securely, and that personal rights to privacy are maintained. For example, artificial intelligence-based surveillance systems need to balance security while protecting privacy interests.

Employment and the Future of Work

AI automation will replace some of the jobs currently performed by humans, especially in industries that rely heavily on routine behaviors. But, as we’ve seen, it will also generate new roles and opportunities that require new skills — which must now be factored into educational and policy planning to help workers re-skill and up-skill.

Accountability and Transparency

The greater the complexity of the AI system, the higher the degree of uncertainty regarding its internal decision-making. An issue of accountability and trust is central to the question of current and future AI: How do we ensure that AI machinery is capable of explaining and justifying its decisions to humans, making the AI systems more transparent and accountable to users?

Autonomous Systems and Safety

Questions of safety are involved in the use of fully autonomous systems, from self-driving cars to drones. There are concerns about ensuring that such systems perform reliably and safely across a broad range of operating conditions. One possible solution is to introduce regulatory frameworks and techniques of rigorous testing.

As a conscious being hoping to survive the development of autonomous systems, such as self-driving cars and drones, I need to feel confident that they will not fail and injure or kill me as a consequence.

The Future of AI

The AI of the future seems likely to be exciting, though potentially unstable. The next few years will be shaped by several emerging trends and advances:

Advancements in Machine Learning

Researchers are working on more and more powerful algorithms in the ongoing quest for machine learning. For instance, we have seen techniques such as reinforcement learning, which trains systems to learn through interaction with their environment by way of trial and error.

Integration with Other Technologies

Indeed, AI is likely to integrate many of the new technologies already emerging, such as the IoT (the Internet of Things) and the distributed ledger technology known as ‘blockchain’, to create new applications, as well as to enhance many existing applications. For instance, AI can be used to advance IoT devices that can increase the energy efficiency in a smart home.

Ethical AI Development

Meanwhile, a great deal of attention is being paid to the development of ethical AI frameworks designed to support the use of AI that meets high standards of fairness, accountability and transparency.

AI in Creative Fields

As for art and music — fields known for being particularly difficult for AI — there is already widespread acceptance of and respect for AI-generated art and music, as well as AI tools to help an artist or musician’s process.

Human-AI Collaboration

With more collaboration between humans and AI systems, in which AI extends human capabilities instead of replacing them, the future could see higher levels of productivity and innovation in many spheres.

It has become one of the most disruptive innovation movements of our time, with consequences that extend to nearly every segment of society, from healthcare and transportation to banking, entertainment and education. These are only a few areas where applications of AI can be found today.

The benefits for society are enormous, yet the development of cheaper and more efficient AI also creates significant ethical and social problems that must be solved alongside the technology in order to prevent it from being deployed in dangerous ways.

So, here’s to the future of AI, and to enhanced ethical practices, greater transparency, and human-machine collaboration so that we can continue to work towards a better and more equitable world.

AI isn’t going away. As the technology continues to evolve, it pays to keep up. Whether you’re a student or a professional, or simply curious, following the latest developments in AI will help you make informed decisions about how to interact with this increasingly important technology in a thoughtful, productive and ethical way.
